The bee has been part of BEE Medic right from the start. The idea for our name comes from a child’s drawing by the daughter of our founding couple. It’s a sweet story behind a name that fits remarkably well with what we do every day: because bees and brains have quite a lot in common.

 

A bee’s brain weighs just about one milligram and consists of around one million nerve cells. By way of comparison: the human brain has around 86 billion nerve cells. And yet, with this tiny brain, a bee can achieve remarkable things: bees can learn, find their way round and process information.

 

It becomes even more fascinating when many bees come together. With their famous waggle dance, they can tell their fellow bees the direction and distance of a food source. Individual bees gather information and respond to their surroundings. Within the swarm, this information is pooled. This gives rise to capabilities and decisions that go far beyond what a single bee could achieve on its own. When searching for a new home, for example, individual bees explore various potential nesting sites, share their information with others and thus contribute to a collective decision by the swarm.

 

This reveals an interesting parallel with the brain. Its capabilities, too, arise from the interaction of billions of nerve cells that communicate with one another, exchange information and influence each other. It is their interaction alone that forms the highly complex network which enables our thinking, learning and actions.

 

 

Our BEE Medic bee has been manufactured exclusively for BEE Medic by Warmies®. With its cosy, soft plush fabric and removable millet and lavender filling, it is a pleasant companion for both the practice and the home.

 

The filling, weighing approx. 750 g, can be easily removed via a Velcro fastening and heated in the microwave. It provides soothing warmth and gives off a subtle scent of lavender. Without the filling, the plush bee can be hand-washed.
